Exploring Research Coaching and Mentoring as a Strategy to Promote Research Output and Manage Research Diversity in Private Higher Education Institutions

Research-intensive universities across the world recognise their privileged role as change agents in the global knowledge economy. Private higher education is a complex, highly competitive and differentiated environment that places unique demands on research managers and academics alike. This institutional case illustrates how we have sought to discover and understand the current research culture and the needs of the institutional stakeholders prior to implementing a research coaching and mentoring programme in order to promote research output and manage research diversity. The findings identified the existence of a young, yet diverse research culture with positive intent that either promoted research diversity and tolerance or inhibited equal research participation. The understanding and knowledge gained provided the basis for recommendations for developing a research coaching and mentoring programme in private higher education institutions.

Jeanette Maritz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Studies at UNISA. Jeanette and Retha Visagie are also directors in a research and innovation development coaching practice. For the past eight years, they have been conducting research focusing on building individual and organisational capacity in corporate and higher education settings. They have successfully coached and trained managers and research leaders for sustainable organizational transformation. Most recently, they have pioneered research coaching and mentoring to enhance research excellence in institutions of higher education.

Dr. Retha G. Visagie

Dr. Retha Visagie is a Research Ethics Coordinator in the College of Economic and Management Sciences at UNISA. Retha and Jeanette Maritz are directors in a research and innovation development coaching practice. Their coaching practice aims to promote personal and professional research capacity development.

Prof. Dina Burger is the deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Research at Monash South Africa. She has published several articles in journals and contributed to a book on Project Management. She has also been involved in several research projects. Her broad research interests include Leadership and Research Management.
